Curtin Corner

Curtin Corner is an informal discussion forum jointly sponsored by the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy and the Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC).

The forum aims to encourage the cross-fertilisation of ideas between different parts of the university and within the wider community. It hosts an eclectic range of speakers; including scientists, theologians, economists, diplomats, government ministers and submarine commanders.

The forum is held on Fridays during the university semester. Speakers present for roughly half an hour followed by discussion and debate of the ideas presented, and then a glass or two of light refreshments. The discussions are a great way to relax with colleagues at the end of the week. Please see below for further details on our call for speakers in 2008 and upcoming seminar speakers.

Call for speakers: We are currently preparing the 2008 program. To increase the diversity of presentations, we are particularly interested in hearing from people outside Curtin, from people who have visiting scholars coming during the year whom we might impose upon to come and present at a seminar (or indeed just come along and meet some of the wider community, as a number of visiting scholars did last year) and from post-graduate students looking for a venue to test ideas they are developing in their thesis or just somewhere to come along and discuss them.

All interested speakers should contact Anne Neary at a.neary@curtin.edu.au or on 9266 1111.

What's on this week?

Date: Friday, 25 July 2008
Time:
4pm, with drinks and nibbles to follow at 5pm
Venue: The Executive Briefing Centre, Level 2 West, Building 100, Curtin University of Technology (Bentley Campus)

Topic:
"The influences of institution attended and field of study on graduates’ starting salariesy"

Speaker: Dr Elisa Rose Birch, University of Western Australia

Abstract:
The topic examines the determinants of Australian university graduates’ starting salaries, with an emphasis on the institution attended and field of study. It is shown that there is little difference between the starting salaries of students who attended Go8 universities and those who attended other universities. There are modest differences in starting salaries according to field of study. However, these differences are considerably less than those associated with the type of employment obtained. These results suggest it is what you do in the labour market, rather than where or what you have studied, that is the main determinant of labour market outcomes.

About the Speaker: Dr Birch is Lecturer for Economics Program at the University of Western Australia. Since completing her PhD in 2005 Birch has made contributions in a number of areas in applied economic research including the areas of labour supply, wage determination and the economics of education.
